Sophie Smith

Undergraduate intern (Fall 2021-Spring 2022)

Sophie Smith is an Agricultural Science and Technology major with a concentration in Agronomy at the University of Maryland – College Park and an alumnus of the Environment, Technology and Economy program of College Park Scholars. She is also a founding member and the current president of Epsilon Eta, the University of Maryland’s chapter of the national, professional fraternity for environmental science and sustainability. Sophie is from Harwood, Maryland, but also has strong roots in Dufur, Oregon, a small town where she spends her summers working on a 10,000-acre farm and volunteering for the Wasco County Soil and Watershed Conservation District. Between her experiences in Oregon and her introduction to sustainability and environmental science through her coursework, Sophie became passionate about sustainable agriculture. In the future, Sophie would like to work in the agronomy industry as a sustainability consultant, as well as start her own homestead that incorporates net-zero housing and subsistence farming. Sophie’s other interests lie in cooking, reading, and trying new teas and coffees from the farmer’s market. She is very excited to be joining Dr. Tully’s Agroecology Lab for an internship in the Fall 2021 semester where she will be assisting with a research project investigating the long-term benefits of cover crops on soil carbon dynamics.
