Tyler Demory

Undergraduate Summer Intern

Tyler Demory is a summer research intern through the Coastal Critical Zone Network. Tyler is an undergraduate at the University of Maryland, where they are studying Environmental Science and Entomology, with a focus in soil science. During their time as an intern, Tyler will be primarily responsible for assisting with processing soil and switchgrass samples for the ACRE project. Prior to their time in the lab, Tyler assisted Dr. Brian Needelman in his soil science lab, with activities ranging from collecting and grinding soil samples from field sites, to assisting him in creating a new national contest manual for the Intercollegiate Soil Judging competition. Tyler's interest in agroecology began in their freshman year of undergrad as they began studying soils. The idea that something so overlooked as the ground beneath our feet could be an ecosystem teeming with life fascinated them—and upon learning about the ties between soil health and the health of our food systems, Tyler knew that they wanted to conduct and share research about how to improve our planet's soils as a means to improving agriculture as a whole.
