Soil health

Soil health is defined as the soil’s ability to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans. Soil health is at the nexus of many of the wicked problems faced by humanity - climate change, food security, water availability - just to name a few.

The Agroecology Lab investigates how to improve soil health in both organic and conventional agricultural systems. Projects include field-based experiments, meta-analysis of scientific literature, and analysis of the US conservation investments in soil health through federal programs.

Dr. Tully is also a member of the Maryland Department of Agriculture Soil Health Advisory Board.
